Mt. Morris Bluegrass Jam Camp Information
THANKS for your interest in this year’s
Mt. Morris Bluegrass Jam Camp.
We will be having three days of exciting bluegrass instruction with the energetic and entertaining Tangled Roots. Here’s what you need to know:
When?
- Friday, August 22 – Sunday, August 24 (Check-in opens at 3:00 PM on Friday the 22nd)
Who?
- Beginning and intermediate bluegrass musicians aspiring to enhance jamming skills!
- Beginner: can play an instrument but may/may not have jamming experience and/or cannot yet play with confidence at jam session tempos
- Intermediate: can change chords, play some solos -- looking to build confidence and enhance jamming skills and etiquette
- Faculty - Tangled Roots and Brian Wicklund
- A couple of important notes:
- Minimum age for participants is twelve and students under sixteen must be accompanied by an adult. Mt. Morris Bluegrass Jam classes are designed for adults and no 'supervision' of students will be provided.
- Family members not participating in classes are welcome.
- Bring clothes for hot day, cool nights
- Sorry, no pets!
Where?
- Mt. Morris Camp and Conference Center, Mt. Morris, WI (7 miles NE of Wautoma, Wisconsin). Website: http://www.mt-morris.org/
- Accommodations: (See registration form for costs of each)
- Special Note: The cabin-type dorms are extremely comfortable and roomy. They are made to house 14 people in bunk beds, but we are limiting them to seven persons for comfort and ease of use. If you have a number of people coming together, this is an excellent choice. We have to limit the availability of the one- and two-person rooms in the one building due to costs. If you absolutely need special accommodations please indicate on the registration.
- 7-person cabin dorms.
- Carpeted. Each has a bathroom with showers.
- Not air-conditioned
- Bring your own pillow, towels, and personal items (and perhaps a fan). Linens provided.
- A limited number of camp sites (some with hook-ups) are also available for tents, campers, or motor homes.
- Commuters – Meal costs are noted on the registration.
What?
- Two and a half days of bluegrass music instruction designed for beginner to intermediate players (fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass, or mandolin) looking to gain knowledge about basic techniques and etiquette of jamming and to develop skills and confidence
- You will want to bring a notebook and pen, battery powered tape recorder (don't forget batteries and tapes!), extra strings, INSTRUMENT(S), tuners, etc.
- Class size will be limited to ten for each of the five instruments (first come, first served -- separate waiting lists will be maintained for each instrument)
- Please only one instrument only to get the most out of the weekend
- Beginner and Intermediate group sessions on individual instruments
- Small group ensemble sessions
- An elective sessions on special topics:
- Leads and Fills, Vocal Harmonies, Bluegrass Theory, and How To Practice
- Formal ("coaches" on hand) and informal (around the campfire / fireplace) jamming
- Sunday- Late morning- early afternoon student Send-off Performances
- Two nights lodging plus five meals included in housing cost
- Friday- A light supper will be available at no extra cost for all arriving by 5:30 p.m.
- Saturday- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.
- Sunday- A mid-morning brunch will be provided.
- Commuters – lunch both days and supper on Saturday.
